How to Scroll

Often times, the text of a Bible book, encyclopedia article, word definition, or other reference material is longer than can be displayed on a single screen. When that happens it is necessary to "scroll" the text or image. In other words, you need to move the material up or down (sometimes even left or right) in order to see more.

Whenever material is longer than the available space on the screen, a vertical scroll bar will be placed along the right edge of the window. In the same way, when material is wider than the screen, a horizontal scroll bar will be placed along the bottom edge of the window. The scroll bar is one of two ways that you can scroll the reference material on the screen. The second method is your keyboard.

Each scroll bar is made up of four parts: two directional arrows (bm17 and bm18, or bm70 and bm71), the "thumb" (bm13), and the spaces between the directional arrows and the thumb. You can click the directional arrows to move in the corresponding direction, click to either side of the thumb to move in the corresponding direction, or click and drag the thumb in either direction. Each of these actions will scroll a single line, a single paragraph, or a single "page" (i.e., a full screen) in the selected direction. These settings are not documented here, since you can customize every one of them using the Options | Preferences | Scroll dialog.

The thumb is a "power scroller." You can click-and-drag it all the way to the top of the scroll bar (to move to the very beginning of the current reference work) or all the way to the bottom of the scroll bar (to move to the very end of the current reference work). If you allow the thumb to stop momentarily during a click-and-drag action within the scroll bar, a fly-by hint box will appear next to the thumb and display the current scroll position. That is, the position within the reference work if you were to release the thumb at that point.

bm14 To abandon a power scroll action, and remain at the current location in the reference work, simply move the mouse cursor off of the thumb--to the left or right on a vertical scroll bar, or up or down on a horizontal scroll bar.
