User Testimonials

"Just a word to praise your efforts on the new version 5.

It is a tremendous improvement over previous versions, especially in regard to language use.

I have three other bible software programs which I use, yours is head and shoulders above the others.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you!"

Nothing else works to uninstall and reinstall version 5. (KB978)

If you are trying to install version 5, there are two articles about uninstalling and reinstalling version 5.  Think of these like pain relievers: Normal Strength and Maximum Strength.  This article is the "Maximum Strength" solution and should be tried when the Normal Strength solution doesn't help.

The instructions which follow might seem daunting, but if you print them, read them through once to get the big picture, then check off each task as you do it, you can get through it fine.  These instructions are specific to Windows XP, but the general concepts apply to other Windows versions as well.

  1. Start by downloading the latest update, if you want.
Assuming you have purchased an upgrade to Version 5 already, you may download the update to our latest version 5 for free from our website, using this link. The downloadable updates are cumulative; in other words, you only need to do the most recent one.  Before using an update download that you have saved from a previous time, check the website to make sure that what you have is still the most recent.

When it asks Save or Run, choose Save, and save it to your Desktop. (The Desktop is the screen with your icons/shortcuts that you see when your computer starts up.)  We won't actually install (Run) it until later.

  2. If you have Personal Study Notes ....
Note:  If you have Personal Study Notes you would like to save, you need to back them up first, otherwise skip to Step 3.

Q: How do I determine the name(s) of the file(s) to back up?

A: Your Personal Study Notes are saved in the folder titled "RefWorks".  This folder is usually located in C:\Program Files\Biblesoft\PC Study Bible  {or "PC Study Bible 4" or "PC Study Bible 3.0" if your version 5 was installed over versions 4 or 3}.  There may be two files associated with each Study Note or there may only be one.  The file extensions are “J4L” or “JDR”.  "My Personal Notes" is the title in the menu for PC Study Bible's default study note set, and the file name is "DEFAULT" in the RefWorks folder, i.e. "DEFAULT.J4L" or "DEFAULT.JDR".

Any other note set you created will be stored in files named by whatever "Short Name" you assigned it at the time of creation.  To determine that Short Name, start PC Study Bible and open that note set.  In the row of buttons across the bottom of the screen, click on the copyright symbol (the letter "c" in a circle).  On the resulting dialog, click on the General tab.  Halfway down the screen you can read the File Name.

Once you have determined the names of your Personal Study Note files, copy those files to a floppy or CD or to a folder outside of the Biblesoft folder.

  3. Uninstall per the instructions in KB_1053.

  4. Restart the computer in Safe Mode
    1. Click on Start

    2. Click on Run

    3. Enter “msconfig” (without the quotes)

    4. Click OK

    5. The System Configuration Utility opens, with the General tab displayed.

    6. If the General tab has a dot in front of Selective Startup,
click on the Startup tab in the far right,
make a list of which items on the Startup tab have checkmarks.  You will use this list later to re-apply checkmarks on the Startup tab.

    7. Click on the tab that says Boot.ini

    8. Checkmark the first box which says SAFEBOOT.

    9. Verify that there is a dot in front of “Minimal” to the right of SAFEBOOT.

    10. Click Apply.

    11. Click OK or Close.

    12. The computer thinks for a while.

    13. A prompt appears saying you must restart for the changes to take effect.

    14. Click the Restart button to Restart your computer.

    15. The computer restarts.  You may see messages that you haven’t seen before.

    16. The screen may be mostly black and say Safe Mode.

    17. Login as Administrator if you are prompted to do so.

    18. If asked, say Yes, you want to start in Safe Mode.

  5. The Start bar appears and the right-hand end of the Start bar shows only the time.  The little icons for your anti-virus, firewall, etc., which normally appear to the left of the time will not appear in Safe Mode.  Your computer is running the bare minimum so there is the least chance of a conflict during the install.

  6. Do the install
Place your highest version Reference Library CD in your drive, and reinstall the program.  For example, if you have both a 4.0 Complete Reference Library and a 4.1 Complete Reference Library, use the 4.1. The disc you are looking for has the words "Reference Library" in the title, but not the word "Upgrade". If you are prompted to restart, do so, and choose Safe Mode each time, if asked.  Note: the CD marked Advanced Reference Library Reference Work Award is not considered a "Reference Library" CD for the  purposes of this step.

  7. Start PC Study Bible before installing any other discs, look up a verse, then shut down PC Study Bible.  If you have Windows Vista, you'll first need to apply the compatibility settings in KB842, before starting PC Study Bible for the first time.

  8. If you have any PC Study Bible add-on CDs, make sure your anti-virus software is disabled, install *one* CD (your add-on with the oldest version, e.g. 3.0 or 3.1, 3.3A, BON-50PD, 4.0, 4.1, 4.2, ... If you are prompted to restart, do so, and choose Safe Mode each time, if asked.)

  9. Repeat Step 8 for each of the rest of your add-on CDs. You want to work through your add-ons from oldest to newest, but save add-ons which say "4+5" or "5" until later.
Even my version 3 add-ons?  Yes, version 3 add-ons *do* work in Version 5 of PC Study Bible.

All of the PC Study Bible add-ons are smart enough to install their *content*, and not install their *program* update, if you already are running a newer version.  So, for example, if you are running version 4.0 (or later) of PC Study Bible, then you install The Amplified Bible with 3.3A Update, The Amplified Bible *will* be installed into your version 4 program, but the 3.3A Update will *not* be installed.

However, there is a nuisance side effect of installing a version 3 add-on onto a version 5 system: you may see a PC Study Bible *3* (three) icon appear on your desktop (and in your Start > Programs menu), in addition to version 5.  This does *not* mean that you have installed both version 3 and version 5; these are just extra version 3 shortcuts.  Step 10 below will clean up these extra shortcuts.

  10. Now install your Version 5 Upgrade disc(s).

  11. Install any add-ons which say "4+5" or "5" on them.

  12. Install your Version 5 Update disc(s), e.g. Update with Revised Data, or, Update with Commentary Data

  13. Install the update that you downloaded earlier, if any
If you chose earlier in these instructions to download the latest program update from Biblesoft, make sure PC Study Bible  is closed, then double-click on that download file on your desktop.

  14. Return to your usual configuration from Safe Mode.
    Click on Start

  15. Click on Run

  16. Enter “msconfig” (without the quotes)

  17. Click OK

  18. The System Configuration Utility opens.

  19. Click on the Boot.ini tab

  20. UNcheckmark the first box which says SAFEBOOT.

  21. Click on the General tab

  22. Put a dot in front of Normal Startup

  23. If you made a list of Startup items because your General tab originally had Selective Startup marked,
Click the dot in front of Selective Startup (this removes the dot from Normal Startup)
    Click on the Startup tab
Checkmark the items on the screen which were checkmarked according to your list made above.

  24. Click Apply.

  25. Click OK or Close.

  26. The computer thinks for a while.

  27. A prompt appears saying you must restart for the changes to take effect.

  28. Click the button in the prompt to Restart your computer.

  29. The computer restarts.  As it starts up, it should look like it normally does.

  30. Start PC Study Bible.  It should work unless there is a conflict with other software running on your computer.

  31. Verify that your antivirus software is back on
Usually, restarting your computer will cause your virus protection software to turn back on.

  32. In case you need it in the future, you can move to a different location the update file that you downloaded to your desktop earlier, if any
This is the file that you may have downloaded to your desktop then installed from there.

  33. That's it.  Start PC Study Bible and it should work.
