The results of a search remain available even after you have opened one of the items from the search results. Use the button (located on the local toolbar) that resembles binoculars to display or hide the search results pane in the top portion of the current window. That button will be disabled until a search has been performed. The search results pane can also be used to view the SmartReference™ list, when you opened a window via that method.
