As you use Version 4 or 5, you may encounter the message "Access Violation". This error message can appear in a variety of situations.
Important: When you get an Access Violation message, do NOT use the mouse to click any of the buttons in the error window. Clicking a mouse button will start you down the path toward restarting your entire computer.
Instead, do the Ctrl-Alt-Del sequence on the keyboard, then choose to End PC Study Bible. This will close just PC Study Bible. If you see a prompt about sending information to Microsoft, you can choose "Don't Send". An Access Violation means that PC Study Bible has already died, so closing it this way does no further harm.
Usually, when you start PC Study Bible again, the same steps you were doing before will not result in an Access Violation this time. However, if you see a pattern of steps which always results in an Access Violation, contact Technical Support because you may have found a bug. (Strictly speaking, all Access Violation messages indicate bugs, but having a pattern means it is a bug we can hunt down and fix.)
It is our desire to reduce the number of Access Violations that you encounter. There may be a later release of Version 4 which will help you in this regard.
1. Determine what release you are running now. The release, e.g. "4.1", displays as PC Study Bible starts up. Once PC Study Bible is open, look under Help > About....
2. Begin the process to download (from the internet) the latest release of your version of PC Study Bible, by clicking here. When choosing a download, be sure to select a download that matches your version of PC Study Bible, because version 4 program downloads work only with version 4 and likewise for version 5 downloads and version 5. The download instructions say what release will be downloaded. Only continue with the download if the release to be downloaded is newer than what you have now. This download will install over your current release and upgrade you to the latest available release of your version. Do not uninstall your current version before doing the download.
3. If you receive an Access Violation when you launch PC Study Bible after downloading a new reference work from the internet, the problem may be that the new reference work requires a newer version of PC Study Bible. For example, the Exegetical Dictionary of the New Testament only works with version 4.2B or later. Follow the instructions in step 2 above in order to obtain the latest program version.
4. If you have already considered all the issues above, or they don't apply to your situation, and you get an Access Violation as you are starting PC Study Bible, do the solution for Rebuilding the SCU file.
Why doesn't Biblesoft fix this Access Violation problem??!!
We do. Although you are always seeing the same message "Access Violation", there are actually many different problems which all manifest as Access Violation. Even though we keep fixing different root causes, some root causes remain undiscovered, so the Access Violation message keeps appearing.
